All Saints' Day: a day of remembrance, between tradition and reflection

In France, Germany and Luxembourg alike, the beginning of November is marked by traditions of remembrance and reflection.

All Saints' Day, celebrated every 1 November, is a Christian feast dedicated to all the saints, known and unknown. It is often associated with visits to cemeteries, where families come to lay flowers and light candles in tribute to their departed loved ones.

But one distinction is worth recalling: 1 November is All Saints' Day, while 2 November is devoted to the commemoration of the faithful departed, also known as All Souls' Day.

Traditions that cross borders

In our cross-border region, this period goes by different names. In Germany it is called 'Allerheiligen', while in Luxembourg the feast is known as 'Allerhellgen'.

In Luxembourg, families notably keep up the tradition of visiting cemeteries, laying flowers and candles and having graves blessed. In some parts of the north of the country, an old custom called 'Trauliicht' involves hollowing out and decorating beetroots lit by a candle.

In Germany, Allerheiligen is also observed in several Länder, notably in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, where the day is a public holiday.

A tradition handed down!

Beyond religious practice, All Saints' Day remains a time for passing things on within families. For some, it is an opportunity to get together with relatives, to tell the stories of those who are no longer with us and to carry on customs handed down from generation to generation.

In a daily life often driven by speed and obligations, this day is also a reminder of the importance of taking time to remember.

On this 1 November, Radio Tripoint sends its thoughts to all those who are using this day to honour the memory of their loved ones.
