Supermarket car parks: safety is also a matter for drivers

Supermarket car parks are part of our daily lives. Every day, drivers, pedestrians, families with children and elderly people cross paths there to do their shopping. Yet these spaces, which we often regard as ordinary, also require particular attention.

In some car parks, particularly near the shop entrances, certain behaviour behind the wheel can raise questions. Excessive speed, a lack of vigilance when manoeuvring or insufficient attention paid to pedestrians: all situations that serve as a reminder that caution should not stop when you leave the road.

A shared space where everyone must stay alert!

Contrary to what one might think, a car park is not a risk-free space. Vehicles pull in and out of bays, drivers sometimes reverse with limited visibility, and pedestrians walk between cars, sometimes with children at their side.

In this environment, a few seconds of inattention can be enough to cause an incident. Slowing down, looking carefully before manoeuvring, keeping to pedestrian walkways where they exist and being especially attentive near entrances and exits are essential reflexes.

Vigilance also applies to pedestrians, who should as far as possible avoid crossing between moving vehicles and remain aware of their surroundings.

Safety also starts outside the shops!

Whether in the car parks of Carrefour, Aldi, Lidl or other retailers in the region, the same rule must prevail: everyone's safety comes before speed.

Everyday shopping justifies neither haste nor taking risks. A busy car park is a shared space where everyone should be able to move around in conditions that are as safe as possible.

This responsibility is a collective one. Drivers must adapt their driving, while car park operators can also contribute to safety through appropriate signage, clearly marked walkways and suitable layouts.

A call for collective responsibility!

Through this report, Radio Tripoint wishes to restate a simple principle: prevention begins with everyday actions. Taking a few extra seconds to check your blind spots, slowing down as you approach a pedestrian or letting a family cross can make all the difference.

Road safety is not only about major roads and departmental routes. It also plays out in these familiar places we visit every week.

And you – have you ever witnessed dangerous behaviour in the car parks of shops in your town? Your accounts can help spark a collective discussion about safety and sharing space.
