Arnold VI of Sierck: when Sierck wrote a page of European history.

Visuel « Le saviez-vous ? Arnold VI de Sierck » : un gisant de pierre représentant un chevalier.

Today, Sierck-les-Bains is a small town in the Moselle, on the banks of the river and just a few kilometres from Luxembourg and Germany.

But behind its ramparts and its castle lies a much bigger story.

In the 15th century, the name Sierck resonated in the highest circles of the Holy Roman Empire.

And at the heart of this story is one man: Arnold VI of Sierck.

A powerful lord of the Sierck area

Arnold VI came from the important family of the lords of Sierck and lived in a region that was already strategically placed between Lorraine, Luxembourg and the German lands.

His influence extended far beyond Sierck.

In 1419, he obtained permission from the Duke of Lorraine to build a new fortress on the Meinsberg, above Manderen.

That fortress still exists today.

We know it today under another name: Malbrouck Castle.

So one of the best-known monuments in the Moselle is directly linked to the history of the Sierck family.

From Sierck to the top of the Empire

The story becomes even more spectacular with his son, Jakob of Sierck.

Destined for a career in the Church, Jakob became Archbishop of Trier in the 15th century.

At that time, being Archbishop of Trier did not just mean running an important ecclesiastical territory.

He also became a Prince-Elector of the Holy Roman Empire.

A title reserved for an extremely small circle, which among other things could take part in electing the ruler of the Empire.

The son of a lord of Sierck thus rose to one of the most powerful positions in medieval Europe.

A European story… that began here

That is perhaps what makes this story so fascinating.

When we pass through Sierck-les-Bains, Manderen, Perl, Schengen or the neighbouring villages today, we are moving through a region that, centuries ago, already stood at the crossroads of major European influences.

Borders have changed.

States have changed.

But our region's strategic position has remained.

And the story of Arnold VI and the Sierck family reminds us of one thing:

Long before people spoke of the “Greater Region” or of cross-border areas, our history already reached beyond borders.

A story to rediscover this week

A few days before the Sierck castle festival on 22 and 23 August, it is also a chance to look with fresh eyes at this heritage that we often walk past every day.

Because behind the stones of Sierck castle lies a story that connects us directly to several centuries of European history.
