The exceptional heatwave currently hitting the Greater Region is not just about record temperatures. From the Moselle to Saarland and Luxembourg, the consequences are piling up: events cancelled or postponed, adjusted opening hours, prefectural restrictions and huge crowds at swimming pools and cool spots.

With temperatures approaching or exceeding 40 °C in places, many organisers have put safety first. Several cultural, sporting and festive events have been cancelled or postponed in recent days, and some towns have adapted their programme or dropped the activities most exposed to the heat. The authorities also point to the risk of wildfires, which has led to restrictions on certain outdoor events.

At the same time, swimming pools, approved bathing lakes and air-conditioned spaces are seeing exceptional attendance. Many families are looking for somewhere cool, sometimes as soon as the facilities open.

In Luxembourg as in France, the authorities remain very vigilant and are urging people to avoid travelling during the hottest hours, drink plenty and pay particular attention to the elderly, young children and vulnerable people.

Before you set off…

If you were planning to go to a village festival, a concert, a flea market, a sports competition or an outdoor event this weekend, we strongly recommend that you check it is actually going ahead. Many changes come only a few hours before the start.
