Many pupils, volunteers, association representatives and politicians gathered at the town's sports ground to celebrate the values of inclusion, solidarity and participation that the Special Olympics movement stands for.
A highlight of the ceremony was the symbolic handover of the Flame of Hope, carried jointly by people with and without disabilities. A powerful gesture showing the Special Olympics' commitment to a more inclusive society.
Those present included the mayor of Perl, the mayor of Schengen and Martina Holzner, representing Saarland politically. Their presence underlined the importance of this event for regional cooperation and for sport that is open to all.
Many young people also took part in this day dedicated to respect, living together and civic engagement. The Special Olympics flags and the cheers of the crowd created a warm atmosphere despite the uncertain weather.
The Flame of Hope tour now continues across the country until the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics National Games Saarland 2026, held in Saarland from 15 to 20 June 2026.
By taking part in this event, the town of Perl reaffirms its commitment to the values of inclusion and cooperation that characterise the border region.
