From 15 June to 13 September 2026, the Schengen Museum is hosting the exhibition “Beyond the Border” by German artists Silke Markefka and Nikolai Vogel. It can be seen in a place steeped in history: on board the Princesse Marie-Astrid Europa, the ship on which the Schengen Agreement was signed in 1985.
Through some twenty installations combining painting, text and sound works, the two artists invite visitors to reflect on how borders in Europe have changed. Their project grew out of a journey in 2008 and 2009 along Germany's former borders, at a time when border posts were gradually disappearing.
Silke Markefka's works revisit these landscapes through painting that plays with memory and the different layers of time. Nikolai Vogel complements this approach with sound recordings and literary work that take visitors back into the atmosphere of these places, now transformed.
Shown on the very spot where the idea of a Europe without borders was born, the exhibition invites everyone to reflect on our shared history and on the place borders still occupy in our society.
